About the Artist

Aidan
Powell

Aidan Powell was born in Galway in November 1937, but grew up in Clonakilty, Co. Cork, until the age of 14, when his family moved to Sligo.

He studied Architecture at UCD, where he first earned artistic income by designing and printing the weekly dance posters for the Students’ Union.

His early works were in pen and ink or oils, later moving to acrylics and watercolours. He was never without a pencil for sketching.

He held various solo exhibitions throughout his life, from the late 1970s until 2014, shortly before he died, and occasionally exhibited with other artists.

Aidan was keen to capture and thus preserve the architecture of Dublin’s old pubs, producing a limited edition of 225 sets of six prints entitled An Endangered Species.

His commissioned paintings are held in private collections, and those who invited him to their weddings usually received an original painting of “their” church—more often than not started and finished on site during the wedding weekend.

He was a great supporter of the RNLI and always donated a painting of Dunmore East to the auction, conducted by Roddy Keighery, at the Waterford Harbour Sailing Club RNLI Coffee Morning. He presented a picture of the new lifeboat station in Dunmore East to the RNLI, with permission to distribute the image as a postcard.

The image was later included in Dauntless Courage, the history of the lifeboat in Dunmore East, and the original hangs there today.
